The Monarch :: chrysalis to flight

Some good friends of ours have been raising Monarch butterflies this summer, and they asked if I’d like to come over sometime with my camera.

Wow.

I’m thankful for the invitation, and glad I took them up on it.

The caterpillars wrap themselves into these chrysalis, which start out lime green, with the most amazing detail.

The yellow and black dots look like they were hand-painted. Nope. Just God.

As they get closer to hatching, they start to get dark. By the time they’re ready to come out, the chrysalis turns almost transparent,

and you can actually see all the detail of the Monarch inside.

It really is amazing.

The detail in the wing blew me away. To me, it looks like  a piece of material.

Canvas, maybe?

Beautiful, yes.

Jen - Awesome!!We have more right now and accidentally inherited three baby caterpillars that hatched from eggs on milkweed that we picked for our adult caterpillars! They are literally almost invisible to the naked eye, that’s how small they are. However if you magnify them you see that even that small they have their beautiful stripes!!!!!!!And to think they go from thread like to the size of my pinky finger in 10 days!!!!! How amazing!August 5, 2010 – 9:08 am
